EPA Emission Regulations on newly added Wood Furnace and Wood Boiler category and what you need to know.

May 15, 2015 marked the "effective date" for the New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) and is now well under way as a Federal rule – This new rule included a new Subpart QQQQ that addresses emissions of wood burning furnaces of two different sizes - the "small furnaces" are ones that have an output of no more than 65,000 BTU and the "large furnaces" are rated above 65,000 BTU. This new subpart also includes regulation on both indoor and outdoor wood boiler systems of all sizes.

The EPA has granted the forced air wood furnace manufacturer's some relief by giving this industry a transition period to get products into compliance of the new rule. "Small" forced air furnace products received 1 year (effective May 15, 2016) to test and certify products - and "large" forced air furnace products received 2 years (effective May 15, 2017) to come into compliance with the rule.

Furnaces that are built and sold within this time frame will not be affected by this rule and will be essentially grandfathered in when the rule comes into effect for the respective furnace sizes.
